Jet lag: a temporary disturbance affecting an individual’s circadian (sleep-waking) rhythm caused by undertaking long air journeys across time zones. Internal and external ‘zeitgebers’ (‘time-givers’, e.g. the intensity of light, social occurrences)’ which influence and trigger natural circadian phases and rhythms present in advance following an eastward flight and are delayed after a westward flight.
